K4/C1And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself and sent and fetched the rulers over hundreds, with the captains of hundreds and the guard, Azariah the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, and brought them to him into the house of YHVH, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of YHVH, and shewed them the king’s son. C2And they went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the chief of the fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. C3And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as YHVH hath said of the sons of David. K5/C4And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be porters of the doors [and] keepers of the watch of the king’s house; K6/C5And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur [or] the king’s house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation behind the guard: and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of YHVH. So shall ye keep the watch of the house, that it be not broken down. K7And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of YHVH about the king. C6But let none come into the house of YHVH, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall go in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the watch of YHVH. K8/C7And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and whosoever else cometh into the house [or] that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain [and] put to death: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in. K9/C8So the captains over the hundreds [and] the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses. K10/C9Moreover Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David’s, which were in the house of God. K11/C10And he set all the people, and the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple. K12/C11Then they brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, God save the king. K13/C12And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of YHVH. K14/C13And when she looked, behold, the king stood at his pillar at the entering in, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and sounded with trumpets, also the singers with instruments of musick, and such as taught to sing praise. Then Athaliah rent her clothes, and cried, Treason, Treason. K15/C14But Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of the hundreds, the officers that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of YHVH. K16/C15And they laid hands on her; and when she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king’s house: they slew her there and there was she slain. K17/C16And Jehoiada made a covenant between YHVH and between the king and between all the people, that they should be YHVH’s people; between the king also and the people. K18a/C17And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and brake it down; his altars and his images brake they in pieces thoroughly, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. K18b/C18And Jehoiada the priest appointed the officers over the house of YHVH by the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of YHVH, to offer the burnt offerings of YHVH, as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was ordained by David. C19And he set the porters at the gates of the house of YHVH, that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in. K19/C20And he took the captains over hundreds, and the guard, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of YHVH, and they came by the way of the high gate of the guard to the king’s house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom. K20/C21And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: after that they slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s house. K21Seven years old was Jehoash when he began to reign. |
